For about a year now, Ruby-doc offered a custom Internet search by way of Rollyo. Rollyo lets you define a custom Web search that testicts results to defined set of Web sites. This allowed for Ruby serches of ruby-doc.org, as well as relatively small set of reliable sources (e.g., rubygarden.org).
At the time, this was in direct contrast to mainstream search engines. Google, for example, would allow you to specify one particular site to search, but a set of two or three or 50.
However, some months ago Google introduced custom searches along the same lines as Rollyo. I decided to switch to the Goolge version when I learned that the search results page could be an intrinsic part of ruby-doc.org. Searching no longer takes you away from ruby-doc.org. Google allows you to define the search page stlye, too. Very nice.
One annoyance, though, is the URL. I like to use the browsers address field as a command line, typing in locations and parameters to fetch this and that. The Google custom search URL fugly, way to hard to tap out by hand. A little mod_rewrite, though, offers some improvement.
Now, if you wnt to do a Ruby search, you can formulate queries such as these:
It's not quite what it should be; I had to settle for issuing a redirect unitl I figure out why my Nitro code is boinking on a straight URL rewrite. Nonetheless, Ruby queries just got easier.
