Nearly 9 months living in sunny California now. When returning from Japan it was a funny feeling to actually return to the US and not Europe. We quickly realized that the bay area was our new home. Living there turns out to be very pleasant. The weather and the very slow way of life make as if it was vacation time.
A couple of days ago I released MacRuby 0.3 after 3 months of development. It's another good release, MacRuby is turning more stable bit by bit. We have a new method dispatcher based on the Objective-C runtime, Interface Builder support, and lots of bug fixes and performance improvements. And Rich Kilmer is now helping a lot by working on HotCocoa, a core library that makes Cocoa programming easier by providing nice Ruby idioms. HotCocoa ships with the MacRuby distribution.
I had this HotCocoa project idea in mind since a long time, but had no real clue on how to correctly design and implement it. I exposed the idea to Rich during RubyKaigi, in Japan. And a few hours later, we had a working prototype! It is so great to have Rich on board, as a long time Ruby hacker he was able to come with a consistent and powerful solution for the HotCocoa problem. Rich if you read this message, thank you!
I will theoretically be able to work full time on MacRuby very soon, which is another good news. Until very recently I had to work on different projects at the same time, so MacRuby was only a part of my job.
I will talk about MacRuby at RubyConf 2008, in 6-8 November in Orlando, Florida. And Rich has a talk on HotCocoa too! So see you there!
