Just got back from Ignite Phoenix II. Another whompin’ crowd, and, overall, really good presentations. Props to the speakers and props to the organizers.
High points: Daniel Davis, “Survive Your Commute”; Tim Giron, “Surviving The Next Zombie Uprising”; Aaron Post, “Did Today’s Architecture Cause This Financial Crisis?”; Dean Heckler, “How To Make A Tangible Product In Phoenix”. Low point: What amounted to a 5-minute commercial for yet another Web 2.0 app.
Dean Heckler and Aaron Post did the best jobs of doing what Ignite should strive for: getting people to think about something in a novel way.
Dean’s talk was not only technically well done, but it suggested a way to think about creating products. Most people I know tend to think almost exclusively about creating things for the Web. A few others are more forward-thinking about software development and look at the desktop and mobile devices, yet hardly any talk about making something tangible and concrete, something you can hold in your hand or sit on the floor. Dean’s talk gave just enough information to provoke the idea of making actual physical items, right here in Phoenix.
Aaron’s talk was even more in the spirit of Ignite. He managed to take to seemingly disparate ideas and join them so that you not only saw a connection, but thought about each just a bit differently after he was done. Nicely done.
