Feed Description: Musings on Ruby, Rails, and other topics by an experienced object technologist.
For the past nine months, I’ve been happily employed at a SaaS company, working on a sizable Ruby on Rails app. In those nine months, I deployed a couple of major projects, one a user provisioning function, and the other a new calendar implementation with a spiffy, Google Calendar inspired UI.
I’ve learned a lot. Besides rounding out my Rails skills, I’ve also done a good bit of JavaScript, using PrototypePrototype and Low Pro. We transitioned the app to use Nick Stakenburg’s Prototip 2 framework for general usage, but the calendar app needed quite a bit more dynamics and control than Prototip could provide, and since Prototip is “closed-source” I ended up implementing JavaScript behaviors for the event creation and editing UI.
Now, I’m feeling the need for new challenges.
My “dream job” would:
Allow me to continue to work in my favorite language, Ruby. Mixing in a bit of my second-favorite language, Smalltalk would be cool. I’m a polyglot, and I can deal with mixing in others, but my Major is dynamically typed object-oriented languages
Provide steady work
Not require relocation from the Raleigh-Durham area. Telecommuting is fine, Moderate travel is fine as well. In my IBM days, I did a ton of traveling, and it’s been long enough that I kind of miss it.
Work with a team dedicated to code-craftsmanship, and agility. I’m a TDD/BDD guy, and I prefer pair-programming whenever possible, although recently I’ve been working solo, one of the reasons I’m looking for a change.
If you have, or know of, an opportunity for someone with a strong mixture of Ruby/Rails and Smalltalk skills, I’d love to contact me.
I’ll be in Orlando next week from Tuesday afternoon through Saturday for Ruby Conf 2008. If you are going to be there look up my profile on the pathables.com site for the conference.
