A short while back I blogged about the fact that you don't actually need readline support to run irb (or the Rails console). And, if you build Ruby from source on Windows, you won't have much of a choice but to run without it.

Now I'm starting to think I'm better off. You see, with the one click Ruby installer (which comes with a readline library for Ruby), my irb sessions would usually choke after about 30 minutes. The cursor would "jump" to the line above, and generally become unresponsive. I'd kill the irb session and start over. Rinse, repeat. I never figured out what caused it.

Since I've been using my hand built Ruby (with the LoadError bug fixed) I haven't seen that behavior. Ever. Could readline be the culprit?

I realize this is anecdotal evidence, but it sure strikes me as an amazing coincidence. My gut tells me they're related.
