"According to Ward: what killed Smalltalk was that it was just too easy to make a mess."
This is the first time I've ever heard that as a reason for the death of Smalltalk. I also don't believe it for one second.
What killed Smalltalk was Java (in conjunction with the Sun marketing machine). And licensing. And a radically different programming paradigm that most people couldn't or wouldn't adapt to. And the fact that it was totally unsuitable for scripting.
