So, after Ubuntu 10 collapsed, I decided to give OpenSuse a chance. Installation was mostly painless, though I did have to update my Nvidia drivers immediately because of a weird tiling effect. That also happened with Ubuntu, so not a huge surprise.
So far, mostly good. The wireless seems more stable, and the power management works better. It's not perfect - the cpu seems to stay spun up even while sleeping - but at least the dang thing wakes up from sleep without causing a kernel panic.
Still, it's not without its downsides. I've noticed is that the desktop doesn't look as nice as Ubuntu. I think it's mainly the fonts, but it's hard for me to nail down.
I also made the mistake of trying to use KDE. I figured I'd give it a shot since I haven't tried it in quite a while. Wow, did that suck. Having to configure the toolbar so that I can actually find minimized applications is interface fail. While the fonts leave something to be desired in Gnome, in KDE they were atrocious. I swtiched to Gnome within a few days.
