Whether you choose a Windows or Mac OS, today’s computers are a lot faster and more powerful than ones you could buy only a few years ago. You have needs that your operating system should provide, and that is how you should choose which one to have. What follows is a comparison that can help you decide whether a Mac or Windows-based system is best for you.
The biggest reason that computer users opt for Windows instead of Mac is it’s compatibility ability. Because Windows is used more often, lots of software applications are made to be compatible with Windows.
Even if a Mac version is created it might work differently and it might not always be fully compatible like you’d want it to be. With today’s Mac computers, though, it’s possible to use Bootcamp to run Windows relatively easily. This means that it’s possible to run the Windows OS on any recently built Mac computer. The reverse is not the case, and probably never will be. In the past, when you wanted to put Windows on your Mac you had one option: slow, awkward and unreliable programs like Virtual PC; thankfully this isn’t true anymore. Now it is totally possible to read files and play games and run programs that are made for Windows on your Mac.
There have been many different Windows operating systems, and most Windows users have found Windows 7 to be quite an improvement. In the last few years, Windows has caught up to Mac, and they have become a lot less likely to crash than before, and they also are more reliable. Windows Vista, XP and earlier versions, have had lots of people, who use those systems, complain about lots of crashes and glitches. Microsoft has recently released Windows 7, and it is their operating system that seems to be the most reliable. Sometimes when trends are started, such as making operating systems more reliable, they continue, and we will have to wait to see if that is true with Windows 8.
There are several undeniable advantages to owning a Mac, and one of these is the level of support. With Windows, there are lots of different levels of support and they depend on where the computer was bought and the brand that manufactured it. Yet if you do a little research, you’ll find that many brands of PC have poor or at best mediocre customer service. If you want a higher level of support, you have to pay for it.
In terms of tech support, however, Macintosh has earned a stellar reputation. Not only are you going to be able to call to get support, but there are going to be lots of repair centers in which you can bring your computer instead of having to ship it in to be serviced.
There are a lot of reasons that you may prefer Windows or Mac OS. We’ve looked at some of the basics (budget, preferences, needs, etc) and benefits of both so that, hopefully, you’ll have an easier time choosing between them. Depending on how much and the manner in which you’re going to use your computer, the style of interface that feels better to you and your budget, you should be able to figure out whether you want Mac or Windows OS more.
