There's been a recent rash of popups that have been getting past the Firefox popup blocker. I remembering seeing the first one about a month ago.
Apparently, sites are using plugins (like Flash) to get popup windows to launch. By default, Firefox lets plugins launch popup windows. I found this advice after someone prompted me to Google for an answer. Note that this involves editing the Firefox config, so be careful.
Open Firefox.
Type "about:config" in the address bar, and press enter.
On the resulting page, right click anywhere and choose New -> Integer.
For the preference name, type "privacy.popups.disable_from_plugins" and click OK.
For the value, type "2" and click OK.
The values could be:
0 = all window opens are allowed
1 = opened windows are treated as popups, but allowed to open anyway (with some limitations, such as the popup window count limit)
2 = windows are not allowed to open
Obviously, this means that plugins can't open popup windows, but personally I'm okay with this limitation. It seems to have killed my issue with popups on sites like Drudge Report and www.ucomics.com.
