Let's hope the Microsoft marketing machine has shifted from "Overpromise and Underdeliver" (see PDC 2003) to "Underpromise and Overdeliver" (WinHEC 2005), because what they're showing now isn't very exciting. The Longhorn news has been slow the past year, so many of us thought WinHEC would be the place where they would show some off some interesting technology. Didn't happen.
If you'll remember, all of that stuff is available for XP and above. Dig deeper into the developer center and most of the content is from PDC 2003 or just outdated. The lone "related site", LonghornBlogs, is rarely updated and generally has little Longhorn information on it.
The amount of information available 1.5 years ago at PDC was incredible. Now there's almost nothing. What makes Longhorn Longhorn? As far as I can tell, it has something to do with reading email on a 1"x3" screen on your laptop case and being able to search for files on your computer. Hooray!
Sarcasm aside, when will the floodgates re-open? This thing is going live in a year(!?), and partners are getting zero info, as far as I can tell. I'm confident that they'll pull off the cool new UI, but there's a heck of a lot more to an OS than a pretty UI, and at the end of the day it's that other stuff that makes people want to upgrade.
They'll deliver the goods. I just think that they're doing themselves a disservice by not managing expectations.
