Today is not just a three day weekend bank holiday, its a day to remember those who have fought and died for our country. I think one of the best ways to celebrate this day is to talk to your family about their time in service (whether its your grand parents, or people coming back from Iraq today), nothing brings you closer than hearing their stories. I love talking to my grandparents about their time serving in WWII.
My father’s father, Henry Avery, was part of the campaign in North Africa and then was part of the offensive on Italy including Anzio beach. He finished out the war as part of the occupation force in Austria.
My mom’s father, Wallace Lippincott, worked on planes in the pacific. He told me how a squadron would come in and they would have to work 24 hours straight sometimes to make sure they got all the planes working and back in the air as quickly as possible.
My step-mom’s father, William Alexander, was a scout in the infantry and took part in the battle of the bulge where he was captured by German forces and held as a prisoner of war until being freed by the Russians. (The Russians drank a couple cups of coffee with them then just let them go, they had to find their way across Germany to find American forces on their own)
My wife’s grandfather, Curtis Glasgow, was in the China-Burma-India theater. I remember him telling me how his wife (my wife’s grandmother) was there to see him get on the bus to go and was waiting for him at the bus station when he got back.
Take the time to talk to your relatives today about the time they served.
Thanks to all the people who have served or are currently serving.
