Apparently O’reilly was happy with my What is Visual Studio article because they got me to write one called What is .NET?. This article was significantly harder, the hardest part was deciding on an audience. Alot of .NET descriptions are qualified by being for the Java developer, or maybe for the VB developer, etc. I tried to take a very general approach on this article and not get overly technical or rely on existing knowledge, I also tried to focus on benefits as opposed to technology.
As I read it again the first sentence after the TOC seems pretty harsh, but hey, I just call it as I see it. (Truthfully I was pissed off after reading the marketing speak on Microsoft.com and realizing why so many customers have no idea what .NET really is)
