Folks who argue Nintendo should just make games for other platforms are completely missing the point. Nintendo needs to control their hardware platform in order to force innovation to occur in the control mechanisms. Other console manufacturers who rely on the hardcore audiences and standardized genres don't see this need.
It's a long read, but well worth it, if this kind of analysis interests you. He makes points I don’t think I've seen anybody else talking about. I wonder if he thinks that our (Microsoft's) position as a hardware provider for hardcore gamers is a strength or a weakness; he certainly makes it sound like the innovation is in Nintendo, and the stagnation is in Microsoft and Sony, that we'll end up playing catchup to the new genres that Nintendo continues to invent.
