This is the first of my new polysyllabic spree inspired posts that will become a monthly thing on this blog. The idea is to post the books I bought for the month and the books I read, with comments on all of them. So here goes.

Books Purchased

Extreme Programming Explained : Embrace Change (2nd Edition) – Kent Beck, Cynthia Andres
Songbook - Nick Hornby
A Man without a Country – Kurt Vonnegut

Books Read

Gone with the Wind – Margaret Mitchell
Programming Ruby: The Pragmatic Programmer’s Guide, Second Edition – Dave Thomas, Chad Fowler, Andy Hunt
Agile Web Development with Rails – Dave Thomas, David Heinemeier Hansson

I am pretty excited about a couple of the books I picked up this month. I am ecstatic that Vonneget wrote another book, his essay books are some of my favorites. (Fates Worse Than Death is brilliant). Songbook also looks pretty interesting, basically it’s Hornby talking about his favorite songs and why he loves them. Hornby always impresses me with his willingness to do different things. My other purchase of the month was the 2nd Edition of Extreme Programming Explained, I have been meaning to read this book for some time.

My main book of the month has been Gone with the Wind, and what a book. This is my wife’s favorite book and I think you can learn something about someone by reading their favorite book. I am amazed I never read this book before, even though its always billed as a love story it’s really an incredible epic story about the people of the south before, during, and after the civil war. The historical parts of the book are very well done and the writing is awesome (especially after some of the books I read last month). I am also continuing through the pair of Ruby books I have been working through. I have finished the intro portion of Programming Ruby and plan on just using it as a reference from now on. I am a little over halfway through the Rails book and should have it finished up pretty soon. I am getting a much better handle on the technology and I look forward to spending some more time with Rails.
