I got the exciting news this week that a case study for one of the projects I've been working on has been published by Microsoft at their Customer Evidence Site.  This really was a small project for, but was actually quite fun to do and blog about.  The coolest thing about the project was that it resulted in a good learning experience for me when I was faced with publishing very small images on very small devices.  See my blog post here if you ever need to save really small, high-quality GIF images.  Anyhow, here's an excerpt from the case study, and here's the link.

Located on one of the deepest harbors on the East Coast of the United States, the Port of Virginia is experiencing significant growth in container traffic. Virginia International Terminals (VIT), the company that operates the port’s four terminals, determined that making key logistical information directly available to truckers in real time was critical to maintaining efficient operations in the face of that growth. VIT decided to extend the services provided through its existing Web site—including access to terminal cameras, container tracking, and other logistics information—to a mobile Web site that truckers can access through a Web-enabled cell phone or other mobile device. Through this mobile access, truckers are able to time their arrivals more efficiently, which helps minimize lines at terminal gates, increase trucker satisfaction, and give the port a competitive advantage.

It's very cool to have a project recognized in a case study.  I know that Darrell, Paul and Mark had a case study published about a big project they worked on a few years ago (you may have seen the video from the ShipRepair.Net project at a conference).  This can be a great marketing tool for your company or client, as well as for your own personal career.  I know that our marketing department is handing copies of this case study out to clients to show off the Port’s technical capabilities.

So how would you get one of your projects noticed by Microsoft?

I happened upon this process through a very circuitous route. In fact, it all started when I attempted to enter our mobile site into a mobility contest put on by Thom Robbins , in a shameful attempt to win some free mobile hardware. The site didn’t fit within the contest rules, but he did see a fit for a mobile case study.  I asked Thom  and Andrew Duthie and  the question "How does a developer get their projects recognized by Microsoft?"

Thom: “For many companies they should work through their MS account managers. If they don’t know who that is they should contact the regional director or their local Developer Evangelist.”

Andrew: “Contact your local Microsoft Developer Evangelist. And 're good for more than just case studies. In fact, any time you need developer-related info or assistance, your local DE is a good starting point. If we don't have the answer ourselves, we can usually find someone internally who does.”

There you go, straight from the horse’s mouth.
