In what has become old habit for the Oakland A's, their backs are now against the wall after losing their 8th straight potential series clinching game in the post-season (an MLB record).
Luck never seemd to be in Oakland's favor as Tim Hudson left the game after warming up for the 2nd inning with a strained oblique muscle. Steve Sparks was admirable in relief, giving up only 2 runs and keeping Oakland in a 2-1 game.
In the 6th it looked good for the A's, as Jermaine Dye hit a 2-run HR to put the A's up 4-2. But, close Keith Foulke was brought in to the 8th to close the door, and gave up a double, a sing,e and then a 2-run double to blow the game and send the A's reeling.
Now, the A's must find some way - any way to rid themselves of what can now be officially called a postseason curse. The A's seem to prosper early in ALCS series, but lack "something" in showing they can finish off their opponent.
Barry Zito will be pitching on 3 days rest for the A's for the series finale, while Boston will have a fully rested Pedro Martinez on the mound.
Should the A's lose this game, I think we can say that the window of opportunity will have slammed shut on this team - as Tejada is most likely gone, and several other FAs (like Guillen) might not want to stick around on a team that just can't seem to win the big one.
Some people say that the A's are the Buffalo Bills of MLB. I think it's worse than that. The A's aren't even making it to the championship. I think they're more like the Indianapolis Colts - a team that hasn't won a playoff game since sometime in the 80's.
For my wife & daughter's sake, everyone is just praying for an Oakland victory tomorrow night. Stay tuned ...
