When using Terminal Services in Windows 2000 for remote administration mode, you do the Add/Remove Programs for Windows step, then install Terminal Services. It prompts you about whether it's for remote admin (free) or for remote users (pay).

Not realizing there was a difference, I did the same thing in Windows 2003, and must've spaced that it never asked me about license mode. Apparently, if you want remote admin mode, do NOT install Terminal Services. Instead, right click on My Computer, click Properties, go to the Remote tab, and check "Allow users to connect remotely to this PC". That enables remote admin mode (although this box will also be checked if you installed full-blown Terminal Services).

Brought to you by an unscheduled trip to the hosting facility when I discovered I could no longer remote admin on live servers because the 120-day Terminal Services trial had expired, and a license server could not be found. :-p
