After hearing about SATA's Superior performance, as well as the availability of a 10,000 RPM drive, I took the plunge.  I'm not one to jump onto the latest technology; actually, I'm far from it.  I like to let things settle down, find out what sticks and what doesn't, then confidently drop my hard-earned dollars.  This uncharacteristic move was due in large part to Longhorn and it's current state of hardcore I/O utilization.

Verdict:  I'm glad I did.

I noticed the speed increase during a fresh XP installation.  At the point setup claims “39 minutes remaining” we know we're usually in for a 40-45 minute wait.  I jotted down the time, hoping for a pleasant surprise.  As I watched the numbers tick down far too quickly, I knew things were going to be good.  Eleven minutes after the “39 minutes remaining” mark I was at a clean Windows XP desktop.  Happiness!

To confirm what I've seen, I ran a couple simple benchmarks comparing my last system drive, an ATA100 7,200RPM drive.  Here are the results:

Linear read:  50% faster
Random read:  42% faster
Access time:  35% faster
