Just replaced my primary hard disk with a SSD - big performance improvements.
These are the timings to start a SharePoint VM from scratch to displaying the first portal page.

SSD disk : VHD and state files
Slow secondary disk :
Time: 2.47 mins

SSD disk : VHD
Slow secondary disk : state files
Time: 2.13 mins

Fast big disk : VHD and state files
