Ein großer Schritt für Enterprise Media Anbieter: ab sofort ist die Multicast-Unterstützung [1] in Silverlight verfügbar [2]. Obwohl diese Funktionalität auch im Internet genutzt werden kann, bietet es in geschlossenen Unternehmensnetzen große Vorteile, nicht zuletzt durch die Bandbreiten-Einsparungen.

Es freut mich, dass die Unterstützung endlich "öffentlich" ist und auch verfügbar, so können wir auch gleich in einigen Projekten verwenden. Hier einige Fakten zur Multicast-Unterstützung:

  • Leverages the existing Windows Media Services (WMS) multicast infrastructure broadly deployed among Enterprises – no server or network changes required
  • Integrates transparently with Silverlight applications, no end-user action necessary
  • Multicast Support of live video broadcasts using Silverlight
  • Multibrowser support – Safari, Firefox, Microsoft Internet Explorer on Mac and Microsoft Windows platforms.
  • Transparent operation to the end user – only initiated when a multicast stream file is sent to the Silverlight player
  • Failover for both server and client side play list supported
  • Low footprint

Die Unterstützung erfolgt mit dem Plug-In der Firma Qumo und ist auf Codeplex [3] als Project Starlight im Quellcode verfügbar.
