A lot of people are reporting problems with various games and DDEs (dirty disc errors). What I didn't know is that some Xbox games are released on DVD whereas others are on CD (I thought they were all on DVD). The CD format is easier to read through scratches and spots on your drive lens, so you end up seeing more DDE errors on games that are released on DVD format.
So, I found a cool post over on The Llama's Adventures in Xbox that talks about how you can attempt to clean your own Xbox DVD drive to try and get rid of DDEs. It also has detailed instructions (for you folks who don't mind voiding the warranty) to install a new DVD laser, or even a new DVD drive.
Obviously, the big appeal is to keep from having to turn your Xbox over to Microsoft for 90 days to fix it. The other is to prevent the loss of all your Live! downloads and save games by purchasing a new rig (as some suggest to fix the problem).
Which gives me an idea. A cool app to write would be one that would take your save games and configuration info off of the Xbox hard drive and store it on your PC (like a backup). If the drive ever went bad or you had to replace your unit, you could restore the information back to the "fresh" Xbox using this app. I'll check to see if the new Xbox SDK has information on how to get at this information.
