It is about 1:33 GMT right now. At this exact time 60 years ago the men of the 101st and 82d airborne divisions were jumping out of their C-47 planes above Normandy. There were 13,400 of them and alot of them never made it home. Thus began one of the most important battles in our nations history.
For the last couple of years I have tried to read a book about the war during this time of year. Last year I read D-Day by Ambrose, this year I am reading Band of Brothers, also by Ambrose. Both are great books, Ambrose is a great narrator of history though first person reports, quotes, and facts.
Four of my grandfathers fought in WWII. My Dad's father fought in North Africa, Italy, and Austria. My Mom's father fought in the Pacific. My step-mom's father fought in Europe and was captured during the Battle of the Bulge, he was later freed by the Russians. My wife's grandfather fought in the China-Burma-India theater. It is hard for me to comprehend what they did, they were probably about my age, some of them with new wives just like me...
Saying thank you seems like hardly enough, but thank you to all of the people who fought in the war, especially the ones who turned into my grandfathers.
