Gustavo (a newbie in VB) from Columbia asks...

Are C++ programmers more intelligent than VB programmers?

A very philosophical question. Well, Gustavo, I think it depends on the programmer and not the language. I have seen many good and bad C++/VB programmers.

VB does not make you a good or bad programmer and nor does C++.

I also think that the definition of "good programmer" has changed over the years.
Before, it may have meant writing some complex algorithm, today it is probably more to do with architecture and patterns.

Anyway, businesses want diligent, hard working, smart people, they don't need mathematicians. At the moment, there are two distinct worlds, packaged applications/Games are coded in C++ by smart people and Business applications are predominantly written in VB, by smart people. Most developers can learn a new language within weeks/months and continue on without problem. People in this business tend to be smart.

On the other hand, I held a class for VB about 5 years ago, filled with civil and structural engineers. Although they had degrees and were extremely smart, some of them struggled to get into VB.

Not all minds are alike, even if smart.

Likewise, many programmers might have problems in other fields.

Gustavo, if you enjoy programming keep it up. Likewise, keep the language you feel comfortable in.
