As we approach the All Star break, the A's are only 2 games out of 1st place (an improvement over the last 4 years). However, the A's are in dire straights with Eric Chavez & Tim Hudson on the DL. Plus Rich Harden separated his non-throwing shoulder, and Mark McLemore, Arthur Rhodes & Bobby Kielty are amongst the walking wounded.
Bill Beane tried to boost morale by trading for Octavio Dotel to cure the bullpen woes (worst in the AL in blown saves and ERA), but he immediately gave up 4 runs in blowing a save over the weekend. Hopefully, it was just opening night jitters for him ... there is a lot of pressure on him right now.
I hope that Beane isn't done with his trading wizardry. We still need better setup men (Rincon, Mecir & Rhodes need to go). And, although we missed out on the blockbuster Beltran deal, we still could use a right-handed power stick in the outfield. Lastly, I'd like to see Joe Blanton come up and see if he could provide a boost while Hudson is out (or while Zito is struggling).
Here's to another 2nd-half winning streak and an AL West division title.
