Pat Helland gave 3 inspiring talks today on Service Oriented Architecture (SOA).
His first talk Metropolis: Envisioning the Service Oriented Enterprise gave an overview of his Metropolis vision and was not unlike his article which appeared in the 2nd issue of the Microsoft Architecture Journal. His new song “Mr CIO Guy” however was much more interesting and will, apparently, available to download from http://www.pathelland.com in 2 days. Well worth it, so check it out!
The second talk, Data in Service Oriented Architecture, was essentially an update from his and David Campbell’s classic PDC talks which I blogged about earlier. This time round, the message was much clearer. The Service Agents / Service Masters breakdown of web services took on a “data on the inside” vs. “data on the outside” of the service feel. Excellent talk
His 3rd talk extended the his Metropolis parallels with a detailed comparison between the architecture of physical buildings and that of software applications. While some of the parallels were fantastical, the idea and message were clear: different parts of the application change at different rates. Architecture and layer accordingly.
I’m definitely a big fan of this guy and his thinking.
