I  had a lot of hopes for SQL Server Express 2005 Edition preview last week. I'd have to say after spending three very frustrating days with it, this has got to be the must frustrating “product” I have ever encountered. In the last 3 days, it has made me want to hurl my computer at the wall. If you actually manage to get it installed, you expect to have something like an Enterprise Manager or better the Workbench from Yukon (Eric Feng talks about that “UI“ called XM “coming soon“) to “see“ your databases and tables and do thiings. Instead you get one single icon “SQL Computer Manager” in the whole group and you think that's going to satisfy your desire for this to be an easy to use product. What do I get with it? nothing useful. Starting services. No view of the databases. Instead you are supposed to enter commands at a command line. What commands? Well, there is no fricking help or documents. You can download the documentation extra but that won't tell you shit about what to do with it. There are no sample databases (although thats to keep it “light”). I like to think of myself as a smart guy but after three days I can't figure out how to do anything with this and this is supposed to be aimed at entry level users?? Of course, this is beta and all that but this version should never have shipped to end users. Microsoft should have just waited. Why ship this now in this form without XM when I and many people can't do anything with it? You can try to piece together how to write hello world from this blog post but I can't see doing anything with this in this form.
