For the 1st time in over 4 years, the Oakland A's did NOT make a blockbuster deal at the trading deadline. During the previous 4 years, Oakland pulled off trades to get players like Jermaine Dye, Ray Durham, Jose Guillen, Ted Lilly, Ricardo Rincon, and many others.
Instead, Oakland decided to stand pat and rest on the early acquisition of Octavio Dotel to shore up the closer role (moving Arthur Rhodes back to the setup role). I would've preferred another power bat (or even Placidio Polanco as had been rumored), as well as some depth in the bullpen (Bradford, Rhodes & Rincon just scare me to death right now). But a lot of it probably has to do with the fact that the A's are closer to 1st place (they actually lead by 1.5 games right now) than they have ever been at the trade deadline. Maybe no deal to jumpstart the team was necessary.
Let's just hope the tradition of 2nd-half surges continues (the A's are over .700 after the trading deadline over the past 3 seasons).
