(Stealing a line from a Ministry song this morning.)
My morning routine of ingesting the news of the day caused me to run across this article: Warnings sent to file-sharing software firms. Particularly, this passage turns my stomach:
The companies are [...] urged [...] not to make any changes to their software, such as adding encryption features to hide users' identity. "Encryption only reinforces the perception that P2P technology is being used primarily for illegal ends," the letter says. "Accordingly, we would ask you to refrain from making design changes to your software that prevent law enforcement in our states from investigating and enforcing the law."
Or, to turn this on its head:
"Envelopes only reinforce the perception that letters are being used primarily for illegal ends. Accordingly, we would ask that all good, proud Americans write all your correspondence on post cards, because that makes our job of snooping into your privacy much easier."
