I use two batch files extremely often when RDP'ing into my machines (and not just then). One is for completely shutting it down, the other for sending it into standby mode. Both sitting on my Windows desktop.
Their contents is actually very simple and straight forward.
The first one just kills any program running and shuts down the computer within 1 second. The latter depends on which setting is selected in your Power Options for 'When I press the sleep button on my computer' - it has to be set to 'Stand By'.
