I admit not having spent too much time searching for this, but I now (finally) found the solution to getting the Bluetooth stack to work properly on my Toshiba Portégé 3500 tablet, running Windows XP Service Pack 2. Said solution lies here.
Head for "Case 4" if you already have XP SP2 installed.
