Citing an inability to afford them once their contracts expire in 2005 & 2006, the A's dealt Tim Hudson and Mark Mulder within 48 hours of each other this weekend. Hudson & Mulder have accounted for 162 wins (1/3rd of the A's total wins ) over the last 3 seasons.

In return, the A's received young & cheap prospects, but no big names. Apparently, the A's feel that they cannot afford to go after stars, and must attempt to rebuild by building up prospects into stars and then trade them off as they become unaffordable due to their small market status.

Many now believe that the A's are throwing in the towel for 2005, in hopes that these prospects will be ready for 2006. Regardless, this ends the era of the "Big 3" - the staple of the A's success in their remarkable run since 1999.
