I own an iPod simply because I think it is the best large capacity mp3 player available. I have never been a huge fan of iTunes though, I prefer to buy the CD and then rip it to MP3. This way when we all move to Ogg or some other format I can just re-rip my CDs, instead of dealing with an inferior format or trying to convert. Not that I want to re-rip 600+ CDs, but better than re-buying 600+ CDs.
Well, now RCA is trying to rain on my parade. They released the new King of Leon album, which is incredible (I know because I can listen to it on Rhapsody), but they have included some crappy form of copy protection. This copy protection basically stops me from ripping the CD, and only allows me to listen to the music on the computer, not allowing me to copy it to another device. (Like the iPod) And this is only if it works as designed, some people report that it just crashes their machine.
This is really stupid. Check out the reviews on Amazon, half of them are about the copy protection.... but does it work? I don't think so. A friend of mine was telling me about how awesome the album was.... three weeks before it came out. That's right, the MP3s were out there three weeks before the album hit but they still felt the need to include this stupid feature.
I have heard this might rip the CD, so I might take a chance and go for it.
