I love my new iMac. But no new marriage is without its first few fights as you get to know each other. The "unix under the hood" continues to be the coolest. My new iMac is having kernel panics. It's really cool, they've got a "point and click" nice looking version of the kernel panic log. This makes unix-guy in me feel at home. Of course the frequent kernel panics are kind of annoying me. So my people (me) are talking to their people (tech support).
My first phone conversation was interesting. I've never spoke to a tech support guy that new his stuff like this one. Turned out he used to work at SGI (get to know your tech support guy I always say). He was helpful and gave me some ideas of things to try (basically, this is probably a hardware glitch, and I'm going to have to try a couple of different hardware configurations to find the culprint). My favorite (read: I was shocked beyond belief) part of the discussion came when he suggested that I pull the base off the little CPU glob and pull the MacMall 3rd Party RAM that had been added out--myself. And bragged how easy it was. Apple actually wants me to like own my own hardware. Cool. This is not the Apple I called 8 years ago.
I'm also having a bit of a bus speed panic. I bought the newest iMac because I was under the impression that with the latest processor speed bumps came a bump to 333 bus. For those in the know about "what really matters" in computer performance, bus speeds is one of the big factors in system performance these days. Though Apple's been trying to catch up in the MHz race, none of it really matters, because they've had terrible bus speeds. So I was very excited to be able to get a 333 bus Mac (couldn't have cared less about the 25% MHz speed boost). However, its now looking like I was misled. I'll keep the machine, it runs plenty quick enough for me, but I know some MacMall people that are going to be hearing from me!
