I just finished Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything -- could hardly put it down. I won't belabor you with a review -- there are over a hundred on Amazon -- except to say why I found it so satisfying. I'm a science buff; not a scientist, but reasonably well read in the history and general theories of science, much of which the book covers. But this is no dull High School text; in clear and sometimes humorous prose, Bryson tells the story of how scientists have learned so much about the world and our place in it. It is a fascinating tale of scientists and amateurs pursuing their interests and fighting for their ideas, and in the telling conveys the self-correcting nature of the scientific community. By touching on so many disciplines, Bryson also provides something else, an understanding of how wondrous life is on this tiny planet.
