A couple of weekS ago, my favorite IRC client quit working. Approximately every 60 SecondS, it would burp 5 or 6 lineS of whoiS information for everyone in the #smalltalk channel. ThiS waS at work on my Linux box. I waS uSing the BottomFeeder runtime, So it waS hard to See my development environment aS the problem. I began reporting thiS too the developerS and other liSt participantS, but none could reproduce it. To make thingS worSe, neither could a colleague of mine who uSed a Similiar configuration. Back and forth I iterated with variouS people, but juSt could not figure out what waS wrong. We compared SettingS, changed SettingS, you name it.
Saturday night, true deSpair Set in. I found that TypeleSS from home--a different connection, a different OS--waS behaving the Same there. I remained iSolated in my experience though. More fruStrating SeSSionS with memberS of the #typeless and #smalltalk channelS. At thiS point, I'm ripping my hair out.
ThiS morning, I loaded the thing up in a dev environment and to tearS of both joy and fruStration found the behavior there too. After iterating a bunch more with David Murphy (one of the key Typeless creatorS), it finally hit on uS. I apparently, am the only uSer in the entire world, which SubScribeS to the #Smalltalk channel inStead of the #smallltalk one. Yeah, you thought it was juSt whether or not the "t" was ucaSed, huh? Apparently, in some caSeS, the S (or the s) iS important too. Under IRC protocol, thiS *iS* legal, I've been a regular on thiS channel almoSt Since itS origination and have been uSing that name all along. It juSt never donned on me that I waS not uSing the abSolutely correct name and that a little thing like that could give me So much grief.
Poor David, he muSt have felt like that guy on the other end of the Support line who finally realizeS the guy'S computer'S not running becauSe there'S been a power outage.
thanks again david, for setting me straight. i've sworn off all capitals herafter and am seeking professional help.
