In the comments to this post, it was suggested to me that I should have a look at NetBeans. So I went to the NetBeans site, and first grabbed the current (5.5) release. It was pretty snappy on my Mac, but the Ruby integration apparently requires the (currently beta) NetBeans 6 RC2. So off to the download.

Wow - slow does not begin to describe NetBeans 6 right now. I'm not sure what they are doing wrong, but they need to stop :) It's simple unusable in its current state. Never mind the things I found somewhat irritating (double click on a file to switch views - what's up with that?) - it's just glacial. I can't imagine developing anything using this tool, at least not now :)

Admittedly, our Mac story is none too good right now - but the funny thing is, NetBeans 5.5 was pretty snappy on my MacBook Pro. I don't know why a beta would be unusable when the current release is pleasantly fast.
