I've become more convinced that the French Revolution was a catastrophe after the last two books I've read on the subject - Burke's Reflections, and now, Hibbert's "The Days of the French Revolution". It's an overview covering the time from the meeting of the Estates General in 1789 to the ascension of Napolean to the Council in 1795.

Those six years remind me of nothing so much as the Russian Revolution - the chaos, the terror, the slaughter, the spiralling out of control that ended in dictatorship. Hibbert does a good job of highlighting the most important points in that period, and it reads like a set of dispatches from an overseas correspondent (and I mean that in a good way).
It's a tight, quick read, and provides a good basis for further reading for those interested in the subject. Turns out I am interested, so I'll be looking for more - recommendations are welcome.
