Nintendo continues to lead the console world, but it's not just the Wii that's a hit - the DS continues to fly off shelves:
the portable Nintendo DS was by far the year's best-selling gaming system with 8.5 million units sold, 2.5 million of them in December. In short supply all year, the Wii still sold 6.3 million units, 1.4 million of them last month.
I see a ton of DS systems when I travel, and when I'm out in my own hometown. With Civ revolutions announced for the DS, I'm pondering getting one myself. There is some humor in the story, from Microsoft:
Microsoft spokesman David Dennis said there have been shortages of the Xbox 360 at retailers across the U.S. The company, he added, is working on getting the consoles back on store shelves "as soon as possible."
That doesn't track with what I see. Sure, the 360 sells well, but there are always units at the store. The Wii is still missing from the shelves - I look every time I look at the new games. We've been pondering an XBox as a way of pushing content from our old media center PC to other rooms, but it might be simler to just pick up a CompUSA closeout PC, toss a TV tuner card in it, and go with that. Or, buy a Mac Mine, get another EyeTV, and use that as a DVR. Almost too many options...
