Jeff Jarvis has an interesting write up of a recent "how to" session at the Guardian on getting the old news guys up to speed on modern tools - Flickr, blogs, YouTube, etc. That was interesting in its own right, but it also brought to mind an older hobby horse of his, - the sheer overhead of most news operations. How did this come up?
Well, I was listening to "This Week in Tech" during my long trip, and the discussion was on CES. I don't recall who brought it up, but someone mentioned the size of the NBC operation - lots of people, lots of equipment. Contrast that with what Engadget was doing - in depth coverage on a much, much smaller budget. The entire broadcasting process has gotten a lot easier, and old line media operations are still stuck in the old "army of thousands" model. I don't think that's going to be sustainable over the long haul, and it will be interesting to watch it play out.
