I continue to hear people talk trash about the Wii - I guess it's not a "real" console system without a plethora of FPS games. However, the buying public seems to disagree. A lot:
The company shipped 5.2 million of its Wii console during the April to June period -- that's well ahead of the 1.6 million PlayStation 3 consoles shipped by Sony and Microsoft's 1.3 million Xbox 360s. Sony's second-generation PlayStation 2 console continues to sell well thanks to its low price and Sony shipped 1.5 million of the units during the period beating out the Xbox 360.
That's a ton of consoles. The other thing you have to keep inmind is this: while MS and Sony lose money on each console sale (and hope to make it up in software), Nintendo profits on each Wii. Oh, and all the speculation about how people buy a Wii, and then only play Wii Sports?
Sales of software for the Wii totaled 40.4 million, again easily outclassing the PlayStation 3 at 22.8 million units and the PlayStation 2 at 19.3 million units. Microsoft does not announce software sales estimates for the Xbox 360.
The most recent place I heard that nonsense about the Wii is TWiT. I think Leo and his panel might need to visit flyover country more often :)
