Doc Searls notes that Google has been getting less effective at something he uses it for: finding older stuff he wrote himself:

But lately Google has frustrated me. When I do lookups for subjects, it gives results that include misspellings and other approximations, even when I use the advanced settings. Worse, it's been useless at something it used to do perfectly: find old blog entries of mine.

I use Google the same way, but hadn't done so in a little while - so I tried this search, which I thought ought to pull up this post from August of 2006. As with Doc, I didn't find it on the first page of results. Off to Yahoo, and bam - there it is.

Maybe I'm using the wrong search engine out of inertia.
