So I thought my Samba issues were resolved, but I was wrong - things were still flaky. I had just turned off Samba on the Linux box, as there's really nothing there worth sharing at this point (it's an ancient box with 10 whole GB of disk :) )
However, that didn't clear the issue completely. Turns out I had completely forgotten the mail server on that box - I had set up a local relay many, many years ago, and forgotten all about it. It was still expecting the old network configuration. I'm not sure how an SMTP server with bogus info mucks with SAMBA, but it seemed to be the case - and as soon as I repaired the mail config, the network issues dropped off.
Very weird.
