Ironically, the best source of information I've spotted about the financial mess isn't cable news - it's been NPR's Planet Money blog and podcast. They do a great job of breaking the complex terminology down into something a layman can follow. The best thing to do is start here, with this episode of "This American Life". Then just head over and subscribe to the blog and podcast at NPR.

The cable news seems to be filled with he said/she said "pin the blame on someone over there" style coverage. The "Planet Money" podcast seems to have actual information.
