Lifecasting gets closer:
In what we can only hope is (or isn't?) a freakishly growing trend, Mr. Spence has reportedly sought consultation from the University of Toronto's Steve Mann, a self-proclaimed expert in the field of wearable computing and cyborgs. Essentially, Rob is hoping to install a webcam in his eye socket in order to become a so-called "lifecaster." The camera wouldn't actually be wired to his brain, thus his level of vision would remain subpar, but it would make him a living science experiment that would surely prove insightful to an array of others.
I'm not sure how to react to this. I read a sci-fi book a few years ago that posited a society where nearly everyone was lifecasting at all times, with the video being automatically archived. It made violent crime nearly impossible; everything was being tracked. On the other hand, if you think privacy is dead now, the society envisioned in the story had none (I can't recall the name of the book, which is why there's no link).
On the other, other hand, doing this sort of thing on a voluntary basis only when you want to could lead to some really interesting results (including a real sales bonanza for storage vendors :) ). It'll be interesting to see where this goes. JustinTV is a gimmick; this sort of thing is skating a lot closer to reality.
