Chris Petrilli has been posting on some of the reaction (bad and good) to the release of Python 3.0. I'm not invested in the argument; as a Smalltalk guy, I really don't have that much interest in Python. What I am interested in is how the transition to such a sweeping change plays out. As Chris says, anger over this is silly; it's not as if this change hasn't been discussed - if you use Python and 3.0 surprised you, you simply haven't been paying attention.
The plan seems to be to keep the 2.x stream alive, even as the 3.0 stream moves forward. And that's the part I'll be curious to see: will 3.0 get serious uptake, or will people stick with 2.x? It'll be a major test case in how much change a mature community is willing and able to deal with.
