The Pharo project - a fork of Squeak with fairly ambitious goals - has just launched their new website. They sound like they are willing to take a "burn the diskpacks" approach - here are their goals, listed in bullet points:

  • a clean and lean open-source Smalltalk platform, which arose from Squeak
  • the obvious choice for professional Smalltalk development, for instance, for Seaside applications
  • an emerging platform to help people invent the future

What they say they won't be:

  • backwards compatible to certain Squeak applications (EToys, Nebraska, etc.)
  • resistant to change

Should be interesting to watch.
