Delta Airlines is teaming up with in-flight communication company Aircell to provide Wi-Fi Internet access on shuttle flights between Boston, New York and Washington, D.C. Aircell has previously partnered with American Airlines and Virgin America to offer in-flight Wi-Fi. Laptops, PDAs, and smartphones will all be able to connect to the Web--for a price.
This is cool and all, but - the big winner would be web access on truly long haul flights - trans-atlantic and trans-pacific. The cell tower based tech that US airlines have gone with won't give us that. I sure hope they add some satellite based access for the longer flights - while it might be slower, it would work anywhere, and be very, very useful.
