Roger Ebert used to be smarter than this:

If you are a member of the U.S. Congress, you should not give a damn if you are a Democrat or a Republican. You should discard ideology and partisanship. You should be searching only for what works, or gives promise of working. You should be listening to the best counsel of the wisest people you can find.

See, there's a basic problem with that: If you sit on the left end of the spectrum, you have an entirely different view as to "what works" than if you sit on the libertarian end (and never mind the various points in between). I'm not even trying to make a point about which is (or is not) correct; I'm merely saying that the "can't we all just get along" theory of politics is isiotic.
