One of the things we constantly advise people to do is take action when they want to get involved, and known, within a community. A great example is JRuby. Charles Nutter worked on it, at home, on his own time, and was hired by Sun to work on JRuby full-time.
These days Charles constantly posts opportunities for others to take advantage of. Today in a Twitter post, Charles said:
Why do we mention this here? For the many readers who've been wanting to learn JRuby. People who've been wanting to expand their resume with new skills. For developers who need some evening/weekend sanity hacking to survive.
Here's your chance! Go fix a bug. Learn a little JRuby and Charles Nutter will know your name. A few others will as well. Then next week, fix another one. Become a regular on the mailing lists.
Don't wait for a manager or boss to help you expand your skills and your mind. Do it yourself.
