Yesterday marked a milestone - I gave my daughter her first driving lesson. IT's amazing how many things you do driving a standard shift car that you just take for granted - as we tooled around a parking lot in first gear, that became very apparent.

Brought to mind how I learned to drive a standard, back when I was 17. I had learned to drive an automatic, but once I got my license, the car available to me was an on the column standard shift. My instructions? A piece of paper diagramming the gear positions taped to the dashboard. That worked out fine right up to the point where I had to make my first stop in traffic on a hill :)
